You avoid focusing or entertaining thoughts about future or past activities or things that need to be accomplished and continues to return to the point of grounding in the here and now.
Meditation is often contrasted with contemplation. Contemplation is the focusing of consciousness on one thing, like an idea or particular experience and staying with it for an extended period of time. By comparison, in meditation you are only focused on the here and now which by its nature requires that you not think about anything in particular.
